Cabling

Cable management standards

The cable-dressing standards that keep a smart home serviceable years after handover.

Best practices

  • Photograph every cable tray before ceilings close
  • Maintain an as-built cable schedule per home

Common mistakes

  • Over-tightening zip-ties on Cat6
  • Bundling more than 24 cables in one run without heat calc
  • No slack — no room for future re-termination

Engineering checklist

  • Every cable labelled at both ends
  • Minimum bend radius respected
  • Data separated from power by 30 cm minimum in parallel runs
  • Velcro straps not zip-ties inside the rack
  • Slack loops at every termination for future re-terminations

Recommended workflow

  1. Cable schedule agreed
  2. First-fix pull + label
  3. Testing (Fluke / continuity)
  4. Dressing + slack loops
  5. Photo record
