    How it works

    1. What a smart home is (and isn't)

      A smart home is a coordinated system, not a bag of gadgets. Coordination happens through a controller (hub) that speaks to devices over standard protocols.

    2. The three pillars

      Reliable local control, a private and segmented network, and standards-based devices. Removing any one pillar creates fragility.

    3. Core subsystems

      Lighting, climate (AC + thermostat), shading (curtains + blinds), and security. Energy and water monitoring layer on top.

    4. Cloud vs local

      Cloud makes onboarding easy but adds latency and privacy risk. Local-first means the home keeps working when the internet drops.

    5. Buying decisions

      Choose devices that speak Matter, Thread, Zigbee or KNX — avoid vendor-locked ecosystems that can be discontinued.
